The Spark Program is a new program designed to improve numeracy skills in elementary students (grades 4 – 5) through fun and interactive activities. The program uses a “drop-in” structure consisting of 8 two-hour standalone workshops facilitated by instructors and volunteers. Each session, students will complete a different project using online software such as Tinkercad, Scratch, Desmos, and Canva. Projects include coding games, using art to apply math, creating cookbooks while learning about unit conversion, and more! Through the various projects, students will build on their numeracy fundamentals in the areas of number sense and numeration, geometry, and algebra, with a focus on real-life application, bringing new context and meaning to math principles!

The Spark Program is proudly funded by the Hamilton Community Foundation’s ABACUS LiftOff Grant and is offered in partnership with McMaster University – Department of Math and Stats!

Students in Grades 4 - 5 can sign up!
The program will take place in partnership with various community organizations. Generally, workshops will be held afterschool. For a full schedule, please check back.
There are 8 workshops in the Spark Program. Each workshop covers a different topic and activity, which means you can attend all 8, or pick and choose the ones that are most interesting to you!
The workshops are: 1) Learning Measurements with Slime, 2) Code Your Own Cash Register, 3) Create a Community Cookbook, 4) Code Your Own Traffic Light, 5) Coordinates with Constellations, 6) Escape Your Maze, 7) Explore the Third Dimension and 8) Shoot for the Stars!
